Workers’ Compensation Statistics from the Indiana Department of Labor

In 2007, the Indiana Worker’s Compensation Board reported that:

  • 62,326 claims involving one or more days of missed work were filed.
  • 92 fatalities were reported
  • 17,724 agreements to compensation were filed
    • Of those 17,724 agreements filed:
    • 9,860 were TTD agreements
    • 7,864 were PPI agreements
  • 1,665 requests were made for independent medical examinations
  • 5,971 applications for disputed claims were filed
    • Of those 5,971 applications for disputed claims that were filed:
    • 3,203 were closed by agreement between the injured worker and the worker’s compensation insurance carrier

 


In 2005, there were 26,900 work-related injuries and illnesses in Indiana that required the injured worker to miss work.

In 2005, of those 26,900 work-related injuries and illnesses that required the injured worker to miss work:

  • 40.9% were sprains and strains
  • 10.3% were bruises and contusions
  • 10.0% were fractures
  • 9.9% were cuts, lacerations, and punctures
  • 5.1% were multiple injuries
  • 4.9% were soreness or pain
  • 1.5% were carpal tunnel syndrome
  • 1.2% were heat burns
  • 1.0% were amputations
  • 15.1% were other reasons

In 2005, of those 26,900 work-related injuries and illnesses that required the injured worker to miss work:

  • 32.5% were injuries to the trunk
  • 23.7% were injuries to the upper extremities
  • 23.9% were injuries to the lower extremities
  • 8.5% were injuries to multiple body parts

In 2005, of those 26,900 work-related injuries and illnesses that required the injured worker to miss work:

  • 30.2% were caused by contact with work equipment
  • 22.4% were caused by overexertion
  • 13.1% were caused by a fall on the same level
  • 6.9% were caused by a fall to a lower level
  • 5.2% were caused by transportation accidents
  • 4.8% were caused by repetitive motion
  • 4.4% were caused by exposure to a harmful substance
  • 4.1% were caused by slips or trips
